Best new data miners from Karlsruhe

By: Sandra Koegel

As part of the prudsys user days 2009 that ended one June 24, the best up-and-coming data miners in the world were awarded their prize in front of numerous participants. The team from Karlsruhe University took first place.

From 23rd-24th June 2009 numerous interested parties and users from universities and business met at the prudsys user days to get more information on new usage scenarios for intelligent data analysis (data mining) and to discuss retail data protection regulations with experts.

A highlight of this year's event was the now traditional awarding of the DATA-MINING-CUP prizes.
Realtime Analytics specialist prudsys as the organiser of the DATA-MINING-CUP again challenged students from home and abroad to test their data mining skills
using a practical analysis task. In this year's competition Libri GmbH, Germany's leading book wholesaler, supported prudsys AG and provided the task and data for the competition. The task in this year's competition was therefore to forecast the sale of 8 specific book titles in 2418 shops (locations) as precisely as possible.

More than 100 teams from Germany and other countries registered to take part in the DATA-MINING-CUP 2009. Each university could register up to two teams. 52 team solutions, including from universities in Canada, USA, UK, Russia, China and Germany were submitted and analysed.
The best data mining team this year came from Karlsruhe University. The students from Karlsruhe are sure to be delighted about the EUR 2,500 prize. The prizes for the second and third teams were EUR 1,500 and EUR 1,000 and went to students from Technical University Dortmund (2nd) and Technical University Dresden (third).

Thanks for the complete success of the DATA-MINING-CUP 2009 also goes to numerous sponsors, including Intershop and Schober, as well as Libri GmbH who sponsored the prizes.
