Can Data Mining bring you one step closer to the lottery windfall?

By: Sandra Koegel

And they're off! Today marks the start of the ninth run of the world’s leading student competition in the area of intelligent data analysis. A great number of students, both in Germany and abroad, are taking part in the DATA MINING CUP 2008, dedicating themselves to the search for a Data Mining model that will predict how long lottery participants will take part in a lottery.

Starting today, the real time analytics specialist prudsys AG is again calling on students both in Germany and abroad to participate in the DATA MINING CUP 2008, challenging them to test their Data Mining knowledge based on a practical analysis problem.
In recent years, the DATA MINING CUP has become the world’s leading student competition in the area of intelligent data analysis, due in no small part to the highly practical nature of the task to be completed. At many universities and technical colleges it has become a fixed element in the syllabus.
To guarantee that the ninth edition of the DMC competition is also highly relevant to practical situations, this year Günther Direct Services (GDS) is partnering with prudsys AG. The Günther Direct Services GmbH acts as a service provider for the state accredited lottery agent Günther in all direct marketing matters. GDS delivered the anonymized data and the subject expertise for this year’s competition problem.
This year’s DMC competition problem consists of predicting, at the beginning of a lottery, how long a participant will participate.
Competition participants have until May 15, 2008 to submit a valid Data Mining model. As in the past, the best student participants can look forward to attractive prizes again this year, including taking part in KDD 2008 (August 24 – 27, 2008 in Las Vegas, USA).

The results of the competition will be revealed at the DATA MINING CUP User Days, which will take place on June 4/5, 2008 in Leipzig, Germany. This two-day conference explores topics such as Data Mining and real time analytics. Among the leading Data Mining conferences in Europe, it offers an annual platform for communication and exchange among users and Data Mining experts.
