Classic search technologies are based on text mining, categorising, indexing and explicit user feedback. However, only a small minority of visitors give user feedback.

Generally speaking the "human" component of search procedures (i.e. the context and intention of a search) are widely ignored. Search results only show product and document relationships or matchings with the key words and search terms used. They do not take into account current user interests. User interests are indicated by click and purchasing behaviour and other behavior patterns in the online shop or web site.

prudsys RDE records the behavior of each individual user. It takes into account clicking behavior, merchandise purchases, orders, search queries, wish lists, memos and other factors and combines these with the behavior patterns for all web site users. The result is a behavior pattern linked to a particular search query. In this way a particular search query can indicate the intentions of the visitor making the query. This knowledge is then automatically processed and fed back by prudsys RDE either as search recommendations or as a search result list where the items are ranked by personal relevance.

The system learns user behavior from the reaction of users to recommendations and to the ranked search results. This takes place in the background unnoticed by the user and in no way interferes with the search process. Using a powerful real-time algorithm, prudsys RDE records any changes in user behavior immediately and feeds this information into its rule system; this means that it adapts to the current structure of user needs continuously.

The Social Search functions of prudsys RDE can be combined with any of the existing search technologies and does not require manual operations such as tagging or categorising by the retailer.
